Course Objectives:
The purpose of this course is to nurture students to become TCM professionals who are equipped with medical ethics and skills. This Bachelor Degree Course in TCM includes TCM theoretical and clinical modules. Upon completion of this course, graduates will also be awarded with Advanced Diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine conferred by Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. They can also apply for the Singapore TCM-Physicians Registration Examination (STRE) organised by the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board (TCMPB). Candidates who pass the examination will then be eligible as registered TCM practitioners.
Prerequisite of the cours
- Singapore Cambridge GCE “A” Level (At least two passes in subjects at H2 level and two passes in subjects at H1 level) or equivalent or higher
- Language requirement: Singapore Cambridge “O” level Chinese subject pass or equivalent or higher.
Qualification Certificate:
Upon successful completion of the required credits: passes in all required theoretical subjects, clinical practice and the graduation exam, and verification by exam board and the review of the graduation exam, graduates will be awarded the following certificates:
- Advanced Diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine (CHINESE)- confer by Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine
- Bachelor of Medicine (Chinese Medicine) - confer by Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine

Foundation subject. This subject requires students to grasp the basic theories, philosophies and knowledge of TCM. This includes TCM philosophies (Essence and Qi Theory, Yin-Yang Theory, Five Elements Theory), TCM physiology (Organ Clusters, Essence-Qi-Blood-Body fluid-Spirit, Channels and Collaterals, Body type), knowledge of diseases in TCM (Causes of Disease, Pathogenesis), and TCM preventative and therapeutic principles. Foundation subject. Based on the basic theories of TCM, this subject looks into the basic theories, knowledge and skills of investigating conditions, determining diseases and differentiating syndromes. A bridging subject from the basic theories to the clinical subjects, it is one of the core subjects of this course. The aims of this subject are: to familiarise students with the meaning and contents of TCM diagnostics, the concepts and relationships between symptom, disease and syndrome etc, and the principles of TCM diagnostics; to grasp the basic skills and knowledge of inspections, auscultation, olfaction and pulse taking, and basic contents and unified syndrome differentiation systems of 8 principles, disease character and viscera etc; to familiarise students with the handling and integration of case information, thought processes in disease diagnosis, main symptom diagnosis and syndrome differentiation, and the contents, format and requirements of writing medical records. |

Foundation subject. This subject investigates and explains the theories and clinical uses of therapeutic principles and herbal formulae. Students are taught to grasp the components, application, usage, indications, combination significances and modifications of 150 basic, representative and commonly used herbal formulae. They are also given guidance in grasping the principles of herbal formulation, and basic patterns and skills of combining herbs, so as to nurture students to have the ability in analysing and using prepared formulae and in putting together their own formulae. These will set the foundation for upcoming clinical subjects. |

The Emperor’s Canon of Medicine is one of China’s oldest existing medical science classics. It explains the theoretical systems and philosophies of TCM rather completely and not only had a profound influence on the development of TCM but also still holds great significance in today’s academic research and clinical setting. It is thus a compulsory reading for learning TCM. The aims of this subject is: to allow students to have an even more systematic grasp of the basic theories and knowledge of TCM through the learning of the original classic; to familiarise students with the characteristics and ways of thinking of the classic’s theoretical systems and philosophies; to help students understand how the classic is studied so as to nurture the students’ ability to study ancient literature and set a firm foundation for future clinical practice and research in TCM. |

This subject studies the TCM classical literature “Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases” and the academic achievements due to research and development of the classic done by historical physicians. The main research content involves the basic patterns behind the “syndrome differentiation of the six channels” system’s integrated use of its nature, extrapolation, reasoning, treatment principles and herbal formulas. Its ultimate goal is to improve the standards of syndrome differentiation and clinical efficacy. Being a core subject in TCM, this subject encompasses both the theories of TCM and the characteristics of clinical medicine; it is an important foundation for the learning and study of clinical subjects, and is also a bridging subject between the foundational and clinical subjects. With the Emperor’s Canon of Medicine, Basics of TCM, Diagnostics of TCM, Chinese Materia Medica and TCM Formulary etc as foundation and “syndrome differentiation of six channels” at the core, the aims of this subject are: to link pathogenesis, treatment principle, herbal formula and herbs together, and help students grasp the “syndrome differentiation of six channels” system, basic theories and knowledge of relevant herbal formula syndrome differentiations, and principles, thought processes and skills of clinical syndrome differentiation, through closely integrating clinical practice and classroom lectures etc. This is to set a good foundation for improving the standards of syndrome differentiation in various clinical subjects. |

The Synopsis of Golden Chamber is China’s oldest existing treatise on miscellaneous diseases. It encompasses both the theories of TCM and the characteristics of clinical medicine, and is thus a main subject of the TCM clinical foundation subjects. Through this subject, students learn to grasp the basic theories, concepts and skills of the classic; grasp the laws of syndrome differentiation of miscellaneous diseases; open their minds with regards to clinical thinking; and improve their analytical and management abilities in difficult, rare diseases and syndromes, and ability to read ancient literature, so as to set a good foundation for improving their abilities and standards of diagnosing and treating diseases in the various clinical departments. |

温病学Seasonal Febrile Diseases
Seasonal Febrile Diseases is an important clinical foundation subject. It investigates the incidence, development patterns, diagnosis, treatment and prevention methods of seasonal febrile diseases, and is strongly applicable to the clinical setting. Simultaneously, the theories and treatment and diagnosis methods hold great significance in TCM and for febrile diseases and syndromes encountered in the various clinical departments. Through the learning of this subject, students are taught to grasp “Wei Qi Ying Xue syndrome differentiation” and “three-jiao syndrome differentiation” that lie at the heart of the seasonal febrile disease theoretical system, and clinical skills necessary for common febrile diseases. This is to nurture the students’ abilities to integrate disease and symptoms/signs in the treatment of febrile diseases, and to differentiate between syndromes in the clinical setting. Students are also taught to understand the philosophies of the main seasonal febrile disease physicians of the Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as the current academic trends. The purpose of this subject is to reveal the nature of seasonal febrile diseases and to investigate the methods of syndrome differentiation required of various febrile diseases and syndromes encountered in the clinical setting. |

Being based in the theories of TCM, TCM Internal Medicine investigates the diseases of the body’s internal organs and mainly uses Chinese herbal remedies as treatment. With preclinical subjects of TCM set as foundation, this subject explains the causes, mechanisms and treatment principles with regards to the various diseases and syndromes in TCM internal medicine. Being based in the theories of TCM, TCM External Medicine investigates the treatment principles and preventive measures used in the diseases of external medicine that present with external signs and symptoms. TCM Gynaecology uses the basic theories and methods of TCM to recognize and study the female anatomy, physiology, causes and mechanisms of gynaecological diseases, and laws of diagnosis and treatment so as to prevent and treat diseases unique to the female human body. It is an important component of TCM clinical medicine and is one of the core subjects of tertiary TCM institutions. "Normal Human Anatomy" is a science that studies the shape and structure of the normal human body, and is an important basic medical discipline. In addition to clarifying the discussion of human body structure in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the teaching content of this course sets up a section of "Body Surface Marks" in the movement system to introduce the positions of these bony, muscular, skin lines and other signs one by one. This subject includes Western Internal Medicines and the Basis of Diagnostics. Basis of Diagnostics is an important subject of TCM and bridges the foundational and clinical subjects. The diagnosis of diseases is one of the most basic tasks of clinical medicine and is the foundation of preventing and treating diseases. The aim of this subject is to investigate the incidence, development patterns, mechanisms and thought processes of establishing diagnoses of various clinical presentations, so as to recognise diseases in different situations. Its contents include the steps and methods of collecting clinical information, and the evaluation, reasoning and analysis of signs, symptoms and test results etc, which are the skills that all clinical practitioners need to learn and grasp. It is thus the foundation of the various clinical subjects.
Western Internal Medicines is an important clinical subject in clinical medicine. Through the learning of this subject and on top of the foundation of having a complete grasp of the theories and skills of TCM, students are taught to systematically grasp the basic theories, knowledge and skills of internal medicine, grasp the diagnoses, preventions and treatments of common diseases, and be familiarised with the principles and methods of critical conditions in internal medicine.
