Dr S. S. Sathappan and Dr Paul Wong gave an online Special Lecture Series to TCM physicians, acupuncturists and College students every Sunday evening, 7.30 - 9.30pm, from 13 February to 20 March 2022. It was an orthopaedic lecture series covering the following topics: ①Surgical management of common orthopaedic conditions; Anatomy and pathophysiology of ②knee pain and management; ③hip pain and management; ④shoulder and elbow pain and management; ⑤foot and ankle pain management; ⑥pain in the spinal region and management.
The lecture series covered many novel and advanced techniques used in Western medicine and broadened perspectives for TCM practitioners and students. It also discussed how Western medicine and TCM acupuncture could be integrated safely and effectively. The participants were fully engaged, participating actively during Q&A sessions and strongly agreed that it has been a fruitful and beneficial lecture series.
Dr Sathappan is an orthopaedic surgeon at Bone and Joint Specialist Clinic. He has been a specialist in Tan Tock Seng Hospital since 2003 and continues to be a Visiting Consultant since 2016. His sub-specialty interest is in evaluating joint abnormalities pertaining to hip and knee as well as other commonly affecting sports conditions in the knee, elbow and shoulder. He has extensive experience in performing hip and knee joint replacement as well as sports surgery. Dr Sathappan is one of the few surgeons in Singapore who is trained and certified to perform acupuncture as treatment for chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
Dr Paul Wong is a Senior Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine. His anaesthesia and perioperative special interests cover many high-risk major surgeries which includes reconstructive orthopaedic robotic surgery, neurosurgery and complex cardiac intervention. Dr Wong was one of the first anaesthesia instructors in Singapore for Definite Surgical and Anaesthesia Trauma Care and is one of the few fully accredited Ringside Physicians in Asia. Dr Wong also studied Wing Chun and TCM Acupuncture where he is now a registered Acupuncturist.
